There are plenty of blogs out there about gaming. I’ll offer my point of view without going into too much detail about specific games. This blog is about my gaming experience and general strategies that I developed over time with regard to MMORPGs. Games are taking up an increasingly bigger role in society. Not only are they becoming widely accepted but an integral part of the social fabric. Gaming can be used to enhance skills outside the virtual world such as problem-solving and working in a team. However, there can be negative repercussions to out-of-control gaming which may be dealt with in another blog.

I started gaming rather late, in 2005. What I found out early on is that games are only as good as their addictiveness and the quality of their communities is. A good game will enthral you by its smart design and the ability to tap into your personal imagination. Games vary by genre, by the medium they are played on and by the degree they can satisfy your personal expectations towards the balance between complexity and simplicity as well as repetition and exploration. I was mostly into playing MMORPGs, mostly browser-, but also PC-based, and I focused on strategy games within this genre. I excelled at three browsergames where I won various rounds, both as a solo player and as a team. In the end, it was the people I met that were the real fun part of it all – people I chatted with for days on end and many of whom I’m still good friends with, even though I quit playing games altogether two years ago.

For future gamers, the following list of tips should help improve the chances of winning.

1. Identify flaws in the game design and exploit them. One example: you can move buildings in Cityville. So all you need to do in order to earn a lot of money is have one spot where you move your franchises to before collecting the money. That spot needs to have the maximum income bonus you can possibly get.

2. Find strategies that fit your personal gaming style, your expectations towards the game and your daily routine. That goes for the choice of game as well. If you can’t play 2, 3 or 4 hours in a row, several of the more popular PC strategy games aren’t for you. However, browser games may be a good substitute. This question comes up with MMORPGs mainly because you need to interact with other gamers and most games are played in real time. So you’ll be competing with other people.

3. Analyze your strengths and weaknesses. Well-balanced games will allow for different strategies that’ll most likely neuter each other. If you want to win, you need to know where to attack people’s strategies and where and when to get back up for your own safety.

4. Talk. Gain people’s trust, build up a team and get connected to different networks of gamers and staff. Intelligence is worth more than anything. Sometimes you’ll even need to recognize that some other player does things better than you. Don’t be conceited and just learn from them. But don’t forget that you should also give something back. That way you can even turn an enemy into a friend. Overall, it’ll make playing a game so much more fun for all of you.

5. Stick to the rules but not necessarily to your word. Strategy MMORPGs generally offer ways to do diplomacy. Diplomacy is all about knowing when to make friends, when to hold back and when to go to war. Internalize this principle.

6. Play your cards and stop being intimated by the possible strength of other players. Own your character or your account.

Remember, though, it is a game after all. Take things for what they’re worth and remember that anything done in excess is poisonous. All there’s left for me to say is to wish you the best of luck for all your endeavors!
