Intelligence For Life:

You Can't Believe Everything You Read

You can’t believe everything you read, especially in an email. According to researchers at Lehigh and DePaul Universities, people feel more comfortable lying in an email than they do in a handwritten letter:

  • In a study, psychologists gave business students $100 in cash and told them they had to split it with someone they didn’t know. Half the students notified the other person by email, and the other half used pen and paper.
  • Guess what? The emailers were twice as likely to lie about the amount of money they had. They rationalized their actions with excuses like, “Well, at least I gave the stranger something.”
  • So, the scientists repeated the study - but with one change. Instead of contacting an anonymous person, the subjects sent messages to someone they knew. Unfortunately, the results were the same. The emailers still lied about the amount and kept most for themselves. They were just a little more generous in the split.

So why are people more honest on paper? After all, neither email nor snail mail are face-to-face communication. Experts believe it might have something to do with written notes being more personal. Since your handwriting is a reflection of you – not some generic computer font - you’re more likely to be honest with words that are written. If you want the truth and nothing but the truth, your best bet is a face to face conversation. That’s because most people find it difficult to lie when speaking directly to someone, usually because they’re afraid they’ll give themselves away through their body language or tone of voice.
