Great to be back online!

It's been a long time off the computer. I didn't think I'd miss it so much. Having a lot of fun learning what I had forgotten, and surprised at what I remember. Using library computers was a drag. Time was so limited. I rarely went on and did anything other than a brief e-mail. Lovin' it! Happy

The history of chat rooms
Posted November 13, 2013 by TearsAreFallen in Education
Chat rooms are the most popular and most visited on the internet today. The origin of these places is quite intriguing. Chat rooms have humble beginnings that everyone who goes to them should know. We should never take for granted the luxuries that have been afforded to us by the people before us and their hard work. Chat rooms, it feels, have been around for a long time. However, it is not as long as one may think. They have only been around for about 20 years. That’s not very long in the grand scheme of things. The history if the internet chat room is enthralling, and the growth of these places is astonishing.

The internet had interesting beginnings only being utilized by Universities across the southwestern US in the late 60’s. The internet was called ARPANet originally. It has grown exponentially into what we have today. One very crucial portion of the internet is chat rooms. These sites are used by almost everyone around the world today. Chat rooms connect people in many different situations and environments. Chat rooms are one of the fastest growing parts of the internet throughout its history..

Communication through the internet began on bulletin boards and multi user domains. During the 70’s there was an adventure game that spread throughout colleges everywhere that is said to have helped with the birth of the IRC (Internet Relay Chat). The IRC was created by Jarkko “WiZ” Oikarinen in Finland. The IRC’s birthday is late August 1988. Mr. Oikarinen wanted to initially extend the BBS software at Oulu University but it became something more. Once the first irc network was allowed to be used outside of Oulu, Universities very soon followed. By November the Chat service spread like wild fire. The IRC operates on networks of servers that relay messages in real time back and forth between computers on the same network. All of the chat rooms that we are familiar with today are based on the IRC. The IRC is still used today.

The evolution of chat is ever expanding. Chat began as text chatting. This is where users talk in real time with messages being transferred through the computer from screen to screen. This is the most common type of chatting. In the past few years voice chatting has begun to expand and is now very popular. This type of chatting requires a mic and speakers. It is very much like using a telephone but through the computer instead. Today we have video chat which is fairly new to the world of chatting. This requires your computer to have a built-in camera or a store bought camera to transfer images back and forth between the users in live feed. Video, voice and text have been combined today to be the ultimate experience in chatting today.

Many web sites have online chat rooms. This is called web chat. One way that is common is through Java. Java is a computer language that makes it possible for users to chat. New browsers are compatible with this communication language built in. There are sites which offer many chat rooms or may just have one. There are many options. There is now the ability for instant messaging. IMs have become very popular because instant messaging can notify you when friends are on and allow one-on-one chatting. Instant messaging can also allow you to talk too many at once, like in a group setting. The popular IM services are AIM, MSN, and Yahoo. Instant messaging is the “in” thing today. Voice chat enables the chatters to talk to each other without having to type, as I said before it’s like being on the phone. Now we have Video that allows users to see each other and what they are doing. This coupled with voice has become all the rage on the internet today.

Chat rooms are now being used in businesses as well. Businesses set up chat rooms for their clients and customers so that they can get help with new products. Now a customer can go online and get help from experts in a chat room which makes it easier for them to communicate instead of sitting on hold for a long period of time on the phone. Also, chat rooms for businesses make it easier to hold meetings where employees are all over the world. Now with video and voice it takes meetings to a whole other level, instead of the old conference call ways.

There are some major players today in the world of chatting. The long standing Im players are MSN, Yahoo, and AIM (from AOL). Two other ultimate chatting experience providers are USAChatNow and Pal Talk. These places provide online chat rooms and/or communities that are family based and are very safe. Many people do not know that there was a battle for top spot when it came to developing an expansion of the IRC. Commodore international created Quantum Link, better known today after the name change as America Online (AOL). This was the first real time chat for the masses and was in many homes across America and the world.. Instant messaging became the hottest thing to do next. AIM (America online Instant Messaging) debuted in 1997. Following AIM was Yahoo! Messenger in 1998; And finally MSN in 1999. Funny this wonderful capability of instant messaging that many of us use today came about only 10 years ago.

Chat rooms allow you to communicate with another, or many other, people in a real time setting. You are able to have conversations with people around the corner from you, or around the world. Chatting allows users to converse with people they might never be able to talk to in real life. There are different types of chat rooms: open chats, where people can talk about anything and everything; topic-focused chat rooms where people discuss a single topic; and moderated chat rooms where the rooms are controlled by moderators and admin’s to control what goes on and to make the users chatting experience safer. The majority of chat rooms today occurs online and is set up by service providers like AOL and MSN, or through the IRC program.
Chatting has evolved to such a wonderful level. Many may ask themselves, why use or join a chat room? Here a just a few reason I think anyone and everyone should join a chat room or community.
To be a part of a chat community or online family.
Cultural experiences
Social interaction
Formal or informal meetings
Online schooling
Business experiences

There are always things to remember when chatting online. All chat rooms are NOT created equal and some things are very important to remember for safety reasons. There are general rules to being involved in chat rooms that help make the experience more enjoyable. The most common rule is to respect your fellow chatters. It is so easy communicating effectively when you are respected. Strong language which is vulgar should also be avoided. If you are the kind of person who has a hard time with strong language, it is time to train yourself on how to use a proper and acceptable language. Remember, you will put your reputation at stake when you constantly use bad language. Other rules of a general chat include the following. If you want to start a private or person-to-person chat, you need to ask for permission. You must also, if in a cam chat, ask permission to look at someone’s cam. It is vital that you look for the rules of the particular service you are using. This is because some rules are a bit unique to particular sites. Another exciting rule you will find is that members have the right to refuse to reply to a chat message or refuse a peek at a cam. If someone tells you no just move along to the next interesting person you may find. Try to never get offended by someone that does not want to chat with you.

You are also under no obligation to give out personal information. Also, you might have information that is not personal but, without the will to part with it. When it comes to details about you, you are your own master and, you will give information as you wish. In certain chats, people are not allowed to give personal information without exchanging several messages. This is mainly to ensure safety. In certain general chats, you will find that discussion about contraband is prohibited. There are other topics that might be prohibited because of the implications. Also, do not attempt to market your business on chats. This is not good business.

When choosing your name, make sure that it is not offensive.. You must be very careful not to send out certain messages that are not acceptable to the service you are using. Have fun with a name. It is anonymity at its best. In many chats, physical cyber relations are not allowed. Also, many chats will not accept language with particular overtones. There are more rules you will find when you engage in a general chat. They are nothing out of the ordinary and, you need to ensure that you follow the rules to the best of your abilities. If you are not ready to follow the rules, look for another chat which has lesser or more workable rules. When it comes to chats, you have very many options.

Looking back over the history of chatting is quite amazing how chatting has caught on over the years. From regular texting, to voice, to the new video chats, chatting has developed and expanded itself. Imagine how advance the internet and chatting will be 20 years from now. So many were not comfortable with computers at first. Now the first thing that many do when they get a computer and the internet is chat. Chat rooms can be very stress reliving and can become addictive. The attention one can receive from chatting can be a boost to one’s self esteem. Always remember to have fun and be safe when chatting on the internet. The history of chatting will be ever present and ever growing.
There are good number of people even today hold wrong views about online chat rooms. Many people do not get to enjoy the benefits of online chat rooms and online communities because of their misconceptions and at times, their misconceptions make them approach them with wrong expectations.
For example, many parents think that everything concerning worldwide web is bad because in their opinion, the internet is a hub for people that are up to no good. So they think that the worldwide web is not a safe place not only for small children but also for teenagers. They think that online chat rooms too are equally dangerous so they do not use chat rooms themselves nor do they allow their children to benefit from these types of sites. Those who have experience with online chat rooms know that it is totally a wrong perception.
Secondly, many people hold the view that if something is free, it cannot be good or useful. Since online chat rooms are free for everyone’s use, they cannot be good or useful. Such people think that using free services like these will get them into trouble because nothing under this sky comes free so if online chat is free then there should be some string attached to it. This again is a clear misconception. All the best things in life are free, the air we breathe is free and the life we have is free we did not pay for these things. Love of our parents and family is free; we can go on and on with the list of good that that we enjoy free of cost in this life.
There are people who think that online chats serve as doorway for hackers to get into your computer and steal your data. If you have enough security measures such as firewall and antivirus programs installed, then you are safe. There are millions of people who enjoy using online chat rooms and they do not face any security issues. Of course, you should not share your credit card details or other login details to anyone over the chat. You certainly need to take all the necessary precautions to have a safe online experience whether you enter these rooms or not.
On the other hand, because of the misconceptions that people have, they approach these sites with wrong expectations. Young people in particular, think that they can get free access to adult material. Some youngsters think that it will give them access to the underground world.
If you are holding any of these wrong conceptions about online chats, then it is high time to correct your views about these kind of communities. They are indeed fun and it is a wonderful way to meet new people. This is also one of the best ways to share knowledge and information. Only when you have right understanding about online chat rooms you will be able to enjoy the benefits. At we moderate our chat rooms to help ensure there is one form or another to keep our users safe.
Next to the telephone, chatting on the internet is the new found “thing” to do now. It is one of the best forms of communication on the internet today. However, there is a way to speak to people on the internet that is very important to remember. This is called chat etiquette. Even when speaking to friends and family one still needs to remember how to speak on the internet. It is always important to have respect for others when speaking on the internet. Learning chat etiquette is the best way to ensure that you have a great conversation with loved ones ro new found friends. Learn the rules of chat etiquette and you can really enjoy the online chatting experience.
People often times forget that they are speaking to other people when talking online. Whether it is in a chat room, online school, or even in emails, there are things that you can do and say that make it fun and easy to communicate to others online. People you meet online can grow to become important paying customers for any business, and casual friends can become valuable partners. You must always remember that there are common courtesies that you observe just like in the real world. Many do not know these courtesies in the real world and have to be school on the internet. Some learn by trail and error and then others learn from experience. Theses are common rules and observances that can help the best chatters to be even better when speaking to others.
Choosing a good can be more influential than you think. You should be creative and finding a great name. Your name should expound on something that you may be good at in life. For example, if you love horses, your name should be something like……Horsey One. Creativity can be key. Never go with a name that is crude, rude, or socially unacceptable. When you do this you attract the wrong type of attention. You will be ignored, considered a hazard, insulted out of a chat room, or kicked out. You will not stay in a good chat room for a long time if you start out on a bad footing. There are moderators and admin’s that look over sites; you want to get their good attention when you go into a room. It can boost your confidence in a new chat room if when you enter a chat room you get immediate attention. You can do with an awesome name.
Remember when picking out a picture for the chat rooms that allow this feature is important as well. Never put a picture up that is vulgar in any way. Choose a picture that is tasteful and appealing to look at. Be careful when putting up personal pictures of your family. Only choose a picture of yourself at first. There are safety rules in place for a reason. Do not give someone a reason to point you out as there are many people out there on the internet that mean harm. Be creative with this as well, you can put up a picture that is a cartoon character or something that is funny and represents who you are. This can be a great conversation starter.
It is imperative to begin a conversation with a “Hello or How are you doing?” This can be a make or break point in your conversation. When speaking to old friends and family, or when making new friends it is important to recognize initiation of a conversation. This is the best way to strike up a conversation. Greeting someone can mean a lot to the right person. You want to get someone’s attention be acknowledging their existence. This way they are more open to speaking with you. You don’t want to start a conversation with an immediate question unless it is unavoidable. It is all about respect here.
When leaving a conversation you always want to remember to be courteous to others. You can do this in many ways. The most common is to just to say “Goodbye”. They are others that I have found to be quite useful. “Have a great day”, not just a good one!!, “Talk to you later”, for those who do not like saying goodbye because it is so finalizing.
Then there are the unfinished goodbyes like “be right back” “see you in a bit” and “be back very soon”. Any of these, finalizing or left open are respectful ways to acknowledge the other person when leaving. Letting a person know that you care enough to say good bye means a lot. When you just drop out of the conversation you can leave a person hanging and it is very impolite. Again, and I will say this a lot, be respectful!!
There are many aspects to a conversation and every one of those can improve or hinder how the conversation develops. There are things that can be done to keep the conversation, light or professional. Never use CAPS. This is a very important aspect to keep in mind. On the internet this is considered shouting. You never want to do this in a conversation on the internet, even in an email. You want to be in control in any and all conversations online. You really have to judge a conversation when online. Different conversations call for different attitudes. When in chat rooms there are some things to remember. Situations that come up in a chat room can be a variety of things. It is good to think about what you are saying before you hit enter. Don’t try to get into fights, avoid them if possible. There are chatters that will try to provoke you, don’t let them. Ignoring a person can show a lot of things about you and the other person. Be the bigger person always. If you are dealing with a person who is disagreeing with you be polite and ask why, if you choose. If you are in the wrong then be cordial and apologize, we all make mistakes.
People tend to get graphic in some situations and that can lead to distrust and dislike. Avoid these situations always. Inappropriate behavior is not tolerated either. When approached by this situation remember to be polite and let the other person know that you are not interested. If they continues with the behavior then let the moderator or admin’s know what is going on so that they can help. This is what they are there for. But always try to be respectful. Use your manners in real life to help guide you when chatting online. They can be very beneficial to you and people will be more responsive to you as well. Remember to respect a person’s status. If a person is away, busy, or out to lunch, don’t be bothersome. Leave them alone until they come back and make their status available.
Never be demanding of someone, even if you know them well. This is rude and disrespectful. The saying that many mothers said growing up helps everyday when chatting!! “If you don’t have something nice to say, then say nothing at all”. Get the help where you can get, ha-ha. Another thing that can help a conversation is the use of smiley and frowning faces, or . You cannot see what the other persons face looks like unless you are on video cam. This allows us to express our facial expression during a conversation.
