RESPECT

What is it that bothers you the most?
Is it my skin color, my ethnicity or both?

Why do you see me as a person who deserves less?
Is it that in your perfect upbringing you actually believe you are the best?

The last thing I want is to have a historical review
Deep inside I know you are good

Even if I prove you wrong
You'll still refuse, refuse, and refuse
To give me that spot
In society that to me means a whole lot

How can you just sit there?
Sit there and wait?
Do you actually believe being oppressed is our only fate?
or are you planning on giving me respect until it is too late?
Hasn't history taught you anything about you and me?
Can't you see that the cycle goes on and on
and if you don't wake up eventually you'll be the one!

The one fitted in these shoes
I someday will leave behind
Thanks to the friend
I found here today
Doesn't it feel good to have something to say?
One voice at a time and it all goes away
And maybe, just maybe
a piece of me
will someday set yours free.

But why wait?
Can you find it in yourself
to see me the same today?
The same way you see
The people of your color or race
Or can you at least look me in the eye
And tell me the truth
Without singing a lullaby
And acknowledge that you are who you are
Because that's what you choose

Tell me, do you have the courage
to stand up and show that you're free?
And can you accept that this world
Was made for you and me!

I challenge you today
to think differently,
to set others free,
to be the first to say this is it!
And can no longer allow
Myself to oppress people that I thought were different than me
And never again should I
allow other people to program my brain!
